DNPA’s Model Code of Conduct
Digital news platforms adhere to relevant laws, including the Constitution of India, as well as journalistic ethics and practices, maintaining professionalism. Several layers of self-regulatory ethics and codes are in place, including those outlined by specific entities and rigorous processes within newsrooms at the journalist and editor levels.
Accuracy, Transparency & Fairness
Members must refrain from publishing inaccurate, baseless, or distorted material, with mandatory pre-publication verification. Defamation should be avoided, and adherence to applicable laws and rules is imperative.
Right of Reply
Comments or responses from individuals or parties regarding allegations carried in news reports or articles should be incorporated. If not initially included, subsequent responses received should also be included, with the date of the update indicated.
Take Down, Delete, or Edit
Upon receipt of correct information and identification from the concerned individual or party, any false or inaccurate content should be edited or deleted accordingly.
Respect for Intellectual Property Rights
Copyrighted material must be respected, and permission sought for use. Trade Marks and Service Marks of third parties must not be used without permission.
Care in Reporting Sensitive Matters
Special care must be taken in reporting on sensitive subjects, such as sexual harassment, child abuse, and communal disputes, ensuring accuracy, sensitivity, and adherence to relevant laws.
Grievance Redressal Mechanism
Members must follow the grievance redressal mechanism outlined under the Information Technology Act, 2000, as intermediaries. Training and Awareness Programs Periodic training and awareness programs on existing laws and journalistic practices should be conducted for editorial staff.
